Granite Marble
I know granite and marble counter-tops are popular now, but I also know trends change every few years?
I don’t want to invest that much just to have my remodeled kitchen look “dated” in about 5 to 10 years when we want to sell our home. I really don’t care for them-I think they look cold and unwelcoming. What else would be nice, not so expensive and will look great for years to come?
I also live in a four-season climate.
I agree with you about the cold and unwelcoming look of granite counter tops.
I am an Interior Decorator who lives in a four season climate and many of my clients regret all the granite surfaces in their kitchens because it is very cold to the touch and it is a definite plate chiller as well as being a very hard surface which causes more breakage in glasses and dishware.
Although I do like granite, to do the entire kitchen is overkill, in my opinion. Some of my clients are using granite only for the island or just over one bank of cabinets. I believe butcher block counter tops will become more popular in years to come because it is a renewable resource. Concrete counter tops are becoming more and more popular, particularly ones with colored recycled glass mixed in. I also think we will be seeing more bamboo products for counter tops as well. Although not the choice of most, I still think formica countertops are very affordable and the color choices and textures available today can please any ones taste. Because formica is so inexpensive, it really can be changed easily in the future, without breaking the bank.
Trends are just that, trends. What you like today could be disliked in 5 years (even by you!!). As long as you do not pick any specifically custom colors, your choices will not be too offensive to future buyers. Face it, it is very seldom when someone can walk into any house and absolutely love it all (kitchens, bathrooms, floors, and painted walls). I say buy what you like for the here and now (within color reason), enjoy it and do not fret too much about what is going to happen in 5 to 10 years. Yes, neutral colors are a safe bet, always.

Apart from the appealing design the fact is that it took ages to create granite rocks which makes them just as durable and trust worthy. Marbles have been widely used but with threats such as acid rain threatening their existence, Granite is fast replacing them. Polished Granite is visually striking and durable which makes it the best contender for kitchen counter tops. The expensiveness of Marble does not become a hindrance because it is considered an investment of a lifetime solely due to its longevity and durability. Marbles are extensively used in lobbies, hallways, furniture pieces, fire places, kitchens and most notably in bathrooms. The surface pattern of Marbles can most prominently appear as flames, patches or stripes. Marbles are eminent for their vein like patterns which depend on various mineral contents during the re-crystallization process of the original limestone parent rock.
Another Naturally occurring stone which is now widely being used in the décor process is Travertine. It is a porous decorative stone and has been used as a building block and décor stone since time immemorial. Finishes on Travertine can be preeminently be of three types: -Tumbled, filled and unfilled. It is always highly advisable to seal it using sealer to improve its longevity. These stones are increasingly becoming affordable thereby paving way to each and every house hold.

Should I put granite or marble on the bathroom vanity?
What is the maintenance? Cost? What do I put on the floor then?The vanity top is a sink and top –all in one. Can I replace with separate sink and granite? What will look nicer with dark cherry or mahogany?
Depends on what you want to spend and the effect you want. Marble will cost a bit more than granite, but gives a more refined feel (like a spa) to the space, while granite is easier to care for. You might try a faux marble in a low maintenance material like Corrian if you want the best of both worlds- classy look and easy care.
Yes you can replace it w/ a separate sink and whatever material counter top you choose.
As for the flooring anything you’d like. I prefer ceramic tile for ease of care. And it comes in most any colour/size you might like to mix and match any decor
